For the record…

I just wanted to let all you readers out there know that Scarlett can be a bully too…she blames everything on Sophie, but her big butt tries to knock me out of the way whenever there’s food around.

You see? It's no problem for me to login when no one's looking!

Fortunately, I have the mad computer skillz (despite the fact that she’s the one with the blog), and I can sneak in here and write things about her anytime I want…and she won’t even notice!

Oh, and FYI…this Friday (the 28th) is my birthday – I’ll be 3! Can’t wait to see what kind of cake my mom cooks up for the occasion!

Ciao my pups,

Gryphon

Bacon Biscotti

You see? In this pic Sophie's outside...I think she stay that way. I don't want to deal with her stealing my cookies!

Sometimes I get so sick of Sophie…she can be such a bully! Just yesterday she tried trampling me again, but I refuse to leave the kitchen when mom’s cooking. Though she used to ‘accidentally’ drop shredded cheese on the floor (which was awesome), the treats that she’s been making recently more than make up for those empty calories. Tasty, yummy stuff.

Anyway, I don’t know what got into her head, but for some reason mom decided to make treats specifically for Sophie…you know, the hard ones that are way too big for my little mouth. Fortunately, I got the tiny pieces when any of these cookies fell apart. They’re called ‘biscotti’ but, personally, I’m more interested in the bacon chunks found inside.

This is the recipe: Bacon Biscotti

Ingredients: 6 slices of bacon / 3 C of whole wheat flour / 1 C oats / 1 t baking powder / half C water / 2 large eggs / quarter C bacon drippings or olive oil / 2 T honey

Directions: Cook bacon until crisp; remove with a slotted spoon and set aside (reserve drippings). Combine flour, oats, baking powder. In a separate bowl combine water, egg, drippings/oil, and honey. Add wet to dry ingredients along with the bacon. Shape dough into log about 10″ long. Place on ungreased baking sheet and flatten until it’s about 6″ wide.

Bacon Biscotti

Next, cook for 30 minutes at 350F; reduce oven temperature to 250F. Cool log and cut in diagonal into half ” slices. Turn each on side and put them back into the oven for 30 minutes. Mom wanted hers extra crunchy so, after she turned off the oven, she left them there overnight. The smell of bacon was driving me crazy!! I had to bury myself in blankets to stop my mouth from watering like that crazy st.bernard.

As it turns out, Sophie didn’t like these as much as mom had hoped…she still prefers to eat my smaller, softer treats. What’s up with that? She picks up Gryphon in her mouth but she’ll only suck on a piece of biscotti?

I, on the other hand, love the cookies. We don’t usually get a lot of really crunchy treats unless they’re bought from the store (blah), so it was nice to get the change in texture. I just run off with mine and stretch out in my bed to get the main part of the chomping done.

Oh, and the picture shows a full piece…I have yet to convince my mom to give me the whole thing. “Soon, my precious…”. That’s what I say.

Liver, liver, liver!!

Well, my mom already wrote about these treats over on her blog, www.thedailymuise.com, but I just thought I’d share the recipe here.

I’ve always loved liver and was broken-hearted when my mom found out that feeding me too much could be toxic. For a pup my size, it can happen pretty quickly! Until a few days ago, though, I still clung to the suspicion she had alterior motives for cutting it out…that she didn’t like the smell or something just as stupid.

Liver mixture out of the blender and onto the cookie sheet!

The above assumption, however, was blown out of the water when she came home with 4 chunks of liver and threw them in the blender she used to use for morning smoothies. I have won.

And this is what she did:

Ingredients: 1 lb beef liver / 4 large eggs / 1 C cornmeal / a few shakes of garlic powder

Directions: Puree liver. Add eggs, and keep on blending. Throw in the cornmeal and just a few shakes of garlic powder.

Waiting for the goodies...put them in the oven!!

Bake in a well-greased cookie sheet for about 30 minutes. When it comes out it’s easy to slice into whatever size you want your furbaby to have.

Now, I know some out there might find the smidge of garlic powder is a bit controversial but, since this is a treat I’m not allowed to have every day, it’s ok in this recipe. It makes my fur look great!

Slice and serve!

This recipe freezes well, and sometimes I even get them straight from the freezer! Sophie, the st. bernard, gets a whole lot more than me; I let her think she’s special but, the truth is, she still sleeps in the porch at night whereas I get the bed with mom!

First howl…

That's me, Scarlett, on the right. Gryphon's on the left.

Ok, ok…here it goes. Here is my blog. My dog blog.

I am a chiweenie who lives with a spazzy chihuahua and a massive st. bernard. Personally, I think the latter will be moving soon, but I think I’m stuck with the former. He follows me around all the time but, since he lets me sneak his food when mom’s not looking, I suppose he serves a purpose.

I was born in April of 2007…yes, that was the year of the nasty food recall. What was up with that? The AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) – and, yes, that affects us here in Canada – is about as useful as a cat; they regulate the ingredients in our food, but not what makes up those ingredients before they reach the petfood-making facilities. What’s up with all those chemicals used preserve things? We don’t need taxidermists yet!

Fortunately, my mom was feeding me Fromm’s at the time and, as you can see, it’s a 5-scoop bag for sure! Actually, for any of you out there who might be interested in what we get to eat, this is an awesome independent site. Remember:

Dogs have not the power of comparing. A dog will take a small piece of meat as readily as a large, when both are before him. (Samuel Johnson)

Yes, most of us really will eat anything!

So, back to the Fromm’s…after awhile mom started making me (then, when he came along, my brother Gryphon) home-made treats. Lots of fresh goodies! From there she decided to move into the home-cooked meals. I suppose you could say I’m her guinea pig (though she just calls me a pig sometimes); I’m her taste-tester.

As long as she keeps it up I’ll be happy. Every year my vet does a blood test to make sure I’m getting all the good things I need…that everything’s balanced…and I always pass. He still tries to push the Royal Canin, but we both know better now.

For all you pet parents out there…perhaps you could try a few of these recipes and let my mom know what you think. Most of the time she gets the right mix of ingredients together and simply tweaks and twists.

Enjoy!
